Handprinted Silk Scarves by Kathy Klompas

Somewhere at the intersection between my background in fibre arts, my focus on printmaking, my experience in retail sales and my passion for fashion lies my creation of original monoprint silk scarves.

Using a palette of thickened dyes and a wide range of mark making tools, I prepare acrylic plates with bold colours and fluid patterns. You can see an example of my process on this page.

The resulting scarves are unique, using shades that reflect the seasons. I have offered them for sale in many venues where they delighted women who wanted art they could wear in their everyday lives.

Along with creating scarves, I offer workshops in the technique where women create their own signature patterns for themselves or for gifts. The joy and playfulness of the process always brings smiles, opening up participants beyond rigid structures as they make talismans that represent the art inside of them.

The approach to these scarves has influenced my fine art work, where layering, transformation and contrast come together in more measured and constructed pieces.

The scarves are still part of me, in my wardrobe, on my friends, and their creation a continuing source of joy and inspiration.
